Important tips for your prayer hour

.
INTRODUCTION:
The prayer emphasis will be of tremendous benefit to the church and to our nation as we pray specifically for personal spiritual awakening and specific prayer requests, but the greatest benefit will be to those who participate.

PHYSICAL PREPARATION is important. If you can get others to pray with you, its great. You may also want to join others who have signed up to pray at the same time as you have.

TIMING: Begin preparing for your hour a few minutes before your sequence begins.

PLACE: We do not intend to have access to the church building until Sabbath morning at which point, feel free to go to any quiet room to pray. The place can be at the church altar with those in your group; if not, as many as possible gathered at an alternate location.

MATERIALS: You will need a Bible, hymn book (if possible), Prayer requests, pencil and most recent prayer newsletter.

SPIRITUAL PREPARATION is most important. This includes a sense of commitment to the prayer ministry, discipline and a growing faith.
ELEMENTS OF PRAYER - MATTHEW 6:9-13

A. WORSHIP OF GOD
This includes recognizing God for who He is as well as what He has done. It is the part of prayer we call “waiting.” In the Lord’s Prayer it is found in the words “Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.” We call it praise. There are many passages of scripture that help us with this but a few are: Genesis 1:1, 14:18-20, 22:14; Jeremiah 23:6; Psalm 23; Judges 6:24; Exodus
17:15 and Ezekiel
48:35.
B. SUBMISSION OF SELF TO GOD
This is called “meditation.” In the Lord’s Prayer it is the phrase “thy will be done.” Again, there are many passages of scripture that help us but a few to get us started are: John 6:40, 8:24; Ephesians 2:1; I John 5:14-15; Romans 12:1-2.
C. CONFESSION OF SIN IN OUR LIVES
The Bible teaches that unconfused sin will hinder prayer. The Lord’s Prayer says it like this: “Forgive us our debtors.” Some helpful scriptures are John 1:29; II Corinthians 5:21; Isaiah 59:1-2, Psalm 51 and Matthew 18:21-35.

D. GRATITUDE TO GOD
The Lord’s Prayer includes this element as well and we read, “Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever.” Gratitude is often the most missed element, but vital. it is good to read often the story of the ten lepers. (Cf. Luke
17:11-19).
E. SUPPLICATION
The Lord prayed, “Give us this day our daily bread.” This part of praying demonstrates to God that we are dependent upon Him for even the simplest needs.
F. INTERCESSION
This is one of the most important elements of prayer and what our prayer emphasis is all about. God loves for us to be concerned about the welfare of others.

PRAYER HELPS

A. SCRIPTURE SELECTION FOR THE DAY
Some like to study topically looking at such topics as prayer, spiritual awakening or personal faith. The concordance is a great help in finding the passages dealing with various topics.
Some like to study books of the Bible and the book of Acts would be good for praying for personal spiritual awakening.
B. WAYS TO USE THE SCRIPTURE IN PRAYING
It is important to use only a small passage of scripture so you will be able to spend most of your time in prayer. Two or three verses are good. Read the verses carefully. Use your prayer request sheet at this point. Write on your paper “What God is saying to me” and then “What I would like to say to God as a result of this passage.” Keep the prayer journal open to refer to things God is leading you to pray for and answers you get to those prayers. (This refers of course to your prayer time following the 24-Hour Prayer Vigil).
